The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
